The Complete Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist

A step-by-step Google Business Profile checklist to make sure your listing is fully optimized to rank on Google Maps and convert searches into customers.

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important asset for getting found by local customers — and most businesses leave half of it unoptimized. This checklist walks through everything that matters, in order. Work through it once properly, then keep the ongoing items as a habit.

One-time setup

☐ Claim and verify your profile

You can’t optimize what you don’t control. Claim your business on Google and complete verification. Unverified profiles don’t rank.

☐ Choose the right primary category

This is one of the strongest ranking signals. Pick the most specific category that describes your core business. Review options carefully — “Hair salon” vs “Beauty salon” vs “Barber shop” can change who finds you.

☐ Add secondary categories

List additional categories for the other services you offer. This widens the searches you can match.

☐ Complete every field

  • Business name (your real name — no keyword stuffing, it violates policy)
  • Full address (or service area if you go to customers)
  • Local phone number
  • Website URL
  • Hours, including special/holiday hours
  • Business description — clear, natural, mentions core services
  • Attributes (wheelchair accessible, outdoor seating, etc.)

A 100%-complete profile outranks a partial one.

Visual content

☐ Add high-quality photos

  • Exterior (so customers recognize you on arrival)
  • Interior
  • Products / work samples
  • Team
  • Logo and cover photo

Profiles with photos get significantly more direction requests and clicks.

☐ Keep adding photos over time

Fresh photos signal an active business. Add new ones regularly rather than uploading once and forgetting.

Reviews

☐ Set up a review-collection process

Reviews are a top ranking factor and a top conversion factor. Build a repeatable way to ask satisfied customers — direct review links, QR codes, follow-up messages.

☐ Respond to every review

Both positive and negative. Responding signals an active, caring business to customers and to Google.

☐ Handle negatives professionally

A calm, solution-oriented reply to a bad review often builds more trust than a wall of perfect ratings.

Ongoing activity

☐ Post weekly

Use Google Posts for offers, updates, and events. Weekly posting keeps your profile visible and signals activity.

☐ Keep information accurate

Update hours for holidays, fix anything that changes. Wrong info frustrates customers and erodes trust.

☐ Answer questions (Q&A)

Monitor and answer the Q&A section — and seed common questions yourself.

Measurement

☐ Track your local rankings

Monitor where you rank for key searches, by location — local results vary with the searcher’s position. Without tracking, you’re guessing whether your work is paying off.

☐ Review your insights

Track calls, direction requests, and website clicks — the actions that lead to revenue, not vanity metrics.

Doing this across many locations

This checklist is manageable for one business. For multi-location brands or agencies managing many clients, running it manually on every profile doesn’t scale. Tenavora brings rank tracking, review management, and posting for every location into one dashboard — so the checklist gets done consistently, everywhere.

Knock out the one-time setup first, then keep the ongoing and measurement items as a weekly habit. A fully optimized, actively maintained profile is the cheapest, highest-intent customer source most local businesses have.
