Android Tablet or Desktop PC for Your POS?
Tablets are cheap and mobile, desktops are fast and durable for high volume. How to choose your POS hardware by business type — or combine both.
Every new business hits this question sooner or later: buy a two-million-rupiah Android tablet, or spend five million plus on a proper desktop register? The honest answer is “it depends on the business” — but “it depends” without the details is useless, so let’s actually break it down.
One thing to settle first: if your POS is web-based (it runs in a browser), this whole decision relaxes. The same app runs on a tablet, a PC, even a secondhand laptop — one system, one dataset, and the hardware is just a body you pick to suit the job. The dangerous situation is a POS locked to specific hardware, where a wrong purchase on day one locks you in for years.
When the Android tablet is the right call
Tablets win on three fronts: price, space, and mobility.
The entry cost is low — a tablet perfectly adequate for checkout sits around Rp2–3 million, and even a used Android phone with a healthy screen makes a serviceable backup register. For a small coffee bar whose counter is barely two hand-spans wide, a tablet plus a compact bluetooth printer is one tidy setup: no cable spaghetti, no humming tower.
The mobility is not a gimmick. In a restaurant, a tablet travels to the table for order-taking — the order enters the system directly and appears in the kitchen, with no paper ticket retyped later. At a bazaar, a food truck, or an exhibition booth, a tablet on mobile data is the only sensible option.
The weaknesses are just as real. A touchscreen loses to a keyboard for intensive input. Cheap tablets slow down noticeably after two or three years. A battery charged continuously twelve hours a day will eventually swell — use proper chargers and power management. And ports are scarce: cash drawer, scanner, and receipt printer usually go bluetooth or through a hub.
When the desktop makes more sense
High volume changes the math. A minimart with steady queues, a pharmacy with thousands of SKUs, a wholesaler whose average transaction has thirty line items — here a keyboard, a wired USB scanner, and a large screen are not luxuries, they are throughput.
A fast-typing cashier processes transactions on a keyboard far quicker than by tapping glass. Scanner, receipt printer, cash drawer, and customer display all connect by cable — stable, with no morning bluetooth-pairing rituals. Desktops also last: a well-kept register PC runs five to seven years, and individual parts can be replaced when they fail.
The downsides are the classics: it needs counter space, it needs stable power (add a small UPS so a flicker doesn’t kill a mid-payment transaction), and the upfront cost is two or three times the tablet. For a business that isn’t proven busy yet, that’s money that could be inventory instead.
The combination: what established businesses actually do
Increasingly, the answer isn’t either-or.
Restaurants run a PC or large tablet as the main register up front, small tablets in the servers’ hands for tableside ordering, and a kitchen display for the cooking queue — the pattern we describe in restaurant POS with a kitchen display. Retail shops run a desktop at the main counter plus one spare tablet that does double duty: an extra checkout lane during rush periods, and a walking stock-take device in the storeroom.

A short pre-purchase checklist
- Under 100 transactions a day and watching every rupiah? Tablet first. Upgrade when the queue tells you to.
- Many items per transaction, heavy barcode use? Desktop with a wired scanner.
- Selling off-site regularly? Tablet, no debate.
- Frequent power cuts in your area? A tablet has a built-in battery — an underrated advantage. A desktop needs a UPS, full stop.
- Whatever you pick: make sure the POS isn’t hardware-locked, and that it keeps recording sales when the internet drops.
That last point is the most forgotten and the most important. Hardware can be swapped any time; the wrong software is far more expensive to replace. Choose flexible software first, then choose a body for it — never the other way around.
